Dear Pooh, 　 Congratulations on 40 years in the music business. It is an honor to know you, and thank you for all your support! 　 It is so hard to pick only 3 albums, but these had a profound effect on my own life and music: 　 1. The Beatles - Rubber Soul (the Capitol Records, U.S. version): My older sister bought all the Beatles albums, and I loved them all, but when I heard the opening acoustic guitar of I've Just Seen a Face, followed by Norwegian Wood, I knew I had to switch from piano to guitar. 　 2. Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick: This was the album that turned me on to Progressive Rock in the 1970s, a genre I listen to even to this day. My love of Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant and Genesis (as well as the playing of Steve Howe and Steve Hackett) started with this album, which had it all: musicianship, composition, changing time signatures and a sense of humor, all highlighted by Ian Anderson's unique guitar playing. 　 3. John Renbourn - The Black Balloon: I learned to fingerpick on a nylon string guitar, and this album convinced me to switch from playing nylon string to steel string. From the opening notes of The Moon Shines Bright and the English Dance, to the wonderful duo The Pelican, this album shows the beauty of what the steel string guitar is capable of, and it led me to the music of Alex De Grassi, Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke. 　 I had to leave off influences like Paul Simon, Chet Atkins and Pat Metheny, but that will be another day. 　 Thanks for asking me to participate, and again, congratulations to Pooh Yokocho! 　 Best, 　 Doug Smith 親愛なるプーさん、 　 40周年おめでとうございます。あなたと知り合え、とても光栄に思いますし、あなたのサポートに感謝しています! 　 アルバムを３枚に絞るのはとても難しいですが、これらのアルバムは私の人生と音楽に非常に大きな影響を与えたものです。 　 1. Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick: 私が70年代のプログレッシヴ・ロックに夢中になり(現在に至るまでずっと)聴くきっかけになったアルバムです。このアルバムから始まってイエス、ELP、ジェントル・ジャイントそしてジェネシスも(イエスのスティーヴ・ハウやジェネシスのスティーヴ・ハケットのギター・プレイも含めて)大好きになりました。(ジェスロ・タルのリーダー)イアン・アンダースンのユニークなギター・プレイをハイライトにしてミュージシャンシップ、作品、変拍子、ユーモアのセンスなど、何でも備わったアルバムなのです。 　 3. John Renbourn - The Black Balloon: 私がまだナイロン弦のギターでフィンガーピッキングを学んでいた頃、このアルバムを聴いて「ギターをナイロン弦からスティール弦に変えよう」と確信したのです。オープニング・ナンバーの「The Moon Shines Bright」と「The English Dance」から素晴らしいデュオ曲「The Pelican」まで、このアルバムは, スティール弦ギターが生み出せる音楽の美しさを教えてくれました。それが私をアレックス・デ・グラッシやマイケル・ヘッジスやレオ・コッキへと導いてくれました。 　 (上記の３枚を選んだことで)私はポール・サイモンやチェット・アトキンスやパット・メセニーを選外にしなくてはなりませんでした。でも、それについて話すのは、また別の機会があるでしょう。 　 私に(この40周年の記念企画に)参加するように依頼して下さったことを感謝します。 そして、もう一度、おめでとうプー横丁! 　 よろしく。 ダグ・スミス
